“Protector of the weak and annihilator of evil.”

In a faraway kingdom to the east, there once was a towering castle, called Kirin. The back of the castle was covered with thick undergrowth, which had begun to creep towards its inner walls. It was this phenomena the most prominent noble families had come to discuss, however, they were interrupted by a shadow obscuring the light of the moon. Even more worrisome, a beacon of light flashed from the depths of a nearby forest. All of these confusing events were accompanied by a gentle fragrance that seemed to suffuse the area.

One among the group was a reputed scholar, and it was he who spoke first.

“This is the scent of an Orchid. Isn’t it the most elegant of smells? For several days, this scent has permeated through the villages and nearby countryside. Do you not think it the most auspicious of moments, and would not a plant that gives off such a scent be beyond worth?”

The king, upon hearing the scholar’s assertions, commanded his soldiers to seek the source of the fragrance, within the forest, and deliver it to him.

The king’s soldiers chased after the light in the forest for many leagues, before they finally came across a glorious orchid flower. Underneath it was a baby as delicate and magnificent as the flower itself.

Not long after the soldiers returned with the infant, a rumor spread across the kingdom naming her a goddess of orchids, who had been reborn into the realm as a blessing from the heavens. The kingdom rejoiced as the king they once reviled vowed to raise the infant to be a Protector of the Realm.

The child had unimaginable latent potential. Many martial artists of the kingdom, recognizing this, wanted to be the one to teach her, however, the king had his own ideas about her education.

She was taught to perform ceremonial sword dances at festivals and other special events, however, though she performed beautifully, she was not allowed to pursue any further training in swordsmanship. While she could not train her body, she was able to hone her mind, beneath the tutelage of many great sages.

At 16, the child became a shrine guardian and took on many new roles. She did her best to advise the kingdom with her peerless mind and rhetoric, wanting nothing more than to put kingdom back on the right track after many years of rule by the reviled king.

The common people came to adore and trust her for her actions and advice, however, there was someone who was not so easily swayed, a man tired of being overshadowed by the shrine guardian, a treacherous courtier, who had schemed his way into the king’s confidence.

With whispers, the courier began to twist the king’s mind.

“For many years, I have been a loyal servant and adviser to his majesty. Does it not seem odd, mayhap preposterous… Dare I even say treasonous... ? for some flower child to play at advising and directing the future of this kingdom?”

These words further fueled the king’s deepest fears. Though he had taken her in as a way to pacify his subjects and regain favor with them, he now wondered if he had created a rival who would seek to steal his throne. As her popularity grew, the king found himself agreeing with the courtier’s assertions, and he ordered her to be placed under house arrest. She would only be released to perform rituals for the shrine.

One day, a young man climbed over the walls and snuck into the shrine guardian’s residence.

He introduced himself as Yeung Reung-Hyang, a member of the court, but he claimed that one day, he would be the strongest person in all the kingdom, as well as the most learned.

“I know that you have great potential, shrine guardian, and it’s just waiting to be released. Anyone can tell by how skillfully you perform your ceremonial dances. Everyone who sees them is captivated by your ability. Do you really want to spend the rest of your days with only your books to learn from?”

The shrine guardian was quick to agree with Yeung. To commemorate this occasion, Yeung gifted the shrine guardian with a long and sturdy cloth to tie up her hair during what would be many years of training.

And so, the training began, unbeknownst to anyone else in the kingdom.

The shrine guardian, who was smart and gifted, was soon matched in skill with Yeung. As they continued to hone their art, the proficiency and refinement of their techniques improved.

As the years passed, the shrine guardian grew to be a graceful and wise woman who was adored even more by the kingdom’s subjects. Meanwhile, words of Yeung’s martial prowess spread throughout the realm, and he became a heroic figure to the common people.

During this time, the king grew more and more paranoid, his jealousy further incited by the poisonous whispers of his courtier. More than anything, he wanted to banish the shrine guardian from his kingdom, but he feared the anger of his people would be too great.

One day, the courtier said to the king,

“I am fearful. That woman, that shrine guardian...I am sure she is trying to win over your people so that she can steal the throne from you, the rightful ruler of this land. You should command her to take Eshi Castle with that troublemaker Yeung. Can you believe he’s been trying to rally up the common people to his side? This opportunity would not only allow you to ensure that they are both killed, but it will allow you to finally rest easily on your throne.”

For countless years, the kingdom has been trying to take Eshi Castle, however, it was impregnable. After the king ordered Yeung and the shrine maiden to attempt to take it anew, they began their travels immediately. Yeung believed it strange that so few resources were allocated to this expedition, but he did not dare question the king’s command.

Besides, he believed that with the shrine guardian on their side, victory would be certain, for though the world knew of only her mental prowess, he was well acquainted with her martial skills.

Six days they marched, and Eshi Castle was still nowhere in sight.

They ended up in a vast open field, with reeds swaying in the wind like the waves of a turbulent sea. Suddenly, as if all given an invisible signal, the vanguard turned their spears toward the shrine guardian and Yeung.

At that moment, Yeung knew...the lack of resources, the aimless wandering with the castle nowhere in sight...it was all a ruse planned so that they could be killed.

They both felt conflicted. It is one thing to lose one’s life to an enemy’s blade in the heat of a battle; but still another to fight your fellow countrymen, the same people who you believed could be trusted. The soldiers of the vanguard, however, knew neither fear nor conflicted emotions, and charged forward with weapons at the ready.

As Yeung and the shrine maiden tried to sort out their feelings, Yeung’s own men fought to protect them both. They fell, one by one, drawing a sorrowful cry from Yeung’s throat. Without thought, he snatched a weapon from one of the fallen and charged into the heat of battle.

He was greatly outnumbered.

When it seemed that he would die, without gaining any ground, he noticed a Crescent Pendulum cutting through the attacking soldiers. It was the shrine guardian. She had tied the Crescent Pendulum on one end of the cloth Yeung had given her so many years ago, with a sword on the opposite side for counterbalance. With this strange contraption, she was cutting through her foes in an elegant display of martial arts, the likes of which Yeung had never seen before.

She had managed to keep this skill a secret even from Yeung.

He wondered how many countless hours, even years, went into perfecting this deadly art? Watching her fight, Yeung felt a renewed surge of energy. If she hadn’t given up,neither would he.

Finally, the last treacherous soldier fell. The field was now well watered with blood, but despite the carnage, Yeung and the shrine guardian, somehow smelled a strong fragrance of orchids.

Yeung, who was in bad shape and leaning heavily on his sword, said to the shrine guardian,

“Get away from here...and go west. If you go back home now...they will find another way to...try...and kill you. So head west...and keep on training. Maybe one day...when you are strong enough...you can come back home...but now...you have to leave.”

The shrine guardian was confused by Yeung’s rambling and tried to take his hand, however, he slapped hers away. It was then that she noticed the tip of a sword poking through his chest, and finally understood what Yeung was trying to say. Yeung saw her tears and tried to comfort her.

“There is nothing...to be sad about. I will always be with you...in spirit. Every time you train...it will be as if...I am by your side. So please...do not weep...”

Those were Yeung’s last words, and as she gathered his body into his arms, they were all that filled her mind. Yeung had been clever and fearless, and she could not have ever envisioned this ending to his life. So it was that she found herself unable to leave the grave where she had buried him. She pondered the eccentricities of her life: how she was kept away from people, hidden indoors and secluded. That was not the life she wanted.

She didn’t want to run away and become a sage either, living her life through books. She had fought and killed. She was a warrior now.

She had lost the person closest to her, but her story had just begun.

So it was that she made a vow to herself:

She would go west, and keep training. One day, she would return and face those who had betrayed her. Henceforth, she would be the protector of the weak and annihilator of evil.
